The great philosopher Punk once said,
“I’m just a spoke on the wheel.
After I’m gone, the wheels are gonna keep on turning.”
Well, as it turns out, quite a fair bit, actually.
We can start right in our homes.
Many people in the developed world enjoy the privileges of air-conditioning/heating.
In fact, as the figure below shows, in sunny Singapore alone, 30% of household energy use goes to powering air-conditioners (‘cuz hot, lah.).
We’re not saying that Singaporeans should switch off their air-conditioners, but rather, maybe, perhaps, consider setting the thermostat higher so that less energy is used each time.
Another easy method of improving energy efficiency would simply be turning off unnecessary lights when they aren’t in use.
Another aspect we as individuals could consider is simply making more use of public transport rather than driving everywhere (although admittedly this could lead to that).
We don’t mean going cold turkey and selling off your car (or your dad’s car. Which is a double no no.), but rather, perhaps, maybe a commitment to travel to work/school by public transport more often than vroooooming everywhere.
